
The Philippines placed sixth in the Gender Gap Index, which ranks 115 nations covering over 90 percent of the world’s population and was compiled by researchers from Harvard University, the London Business School and the World Economic Forum.
The top 10 countries with the smallest "gender gap": 1. Sweden; 2. Norway; 3. Finland; 4. Iceland; 5. Germany; 6. The Philippines; 7. New Zealand ; 8. Denmark; 9. United Kingdom; and 10. Ireland.

The Global Gender Gap Report 2006 measures the size of the gender gap in four critical areas of inequality between men and women: 1.economic participation and opportunity; 2. educational attainment; 3. political empowerment; and 4. health and survival. The Philippines is the only Asian country in the top 10, scoring well across the board and is one of only five countries to have closed the gender gap for both health and survival and educational attainment.
There are days when I do not feel so proud that I am a Filipino. Let us just say today is not one of those.
